Hyundai Reveals Plans for Electric SUV, the Ioniq 9, to Hit US Market

Hyundai has recently unveiled its latest addition to the electric vehicle market with the upcoming release of the Ioniq 9. This three-row SUV is set to be manufactured in the company’s factory in Georgia, marking a strategic move to expand its presence in the growing plug-in market. As other automakers hesitate to invest in EV technology due to slowing demand, Hyundai is taking a bold step forward by introducing a new vehicle in a popular segment.

The Ioniq 9 is based on the Concept Seven, which made its debut in 2021. This model will be built on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the same platform used for the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, Kia EV9, and Genesis GV60. The decision to manufacture the Ioniq 9 in the United States at the Ellabel, GA-based Metaplant will allow Hyundai to qualify for the federal EV tax credit of $7,500. The production version of the Ioniq 9 is set to be unveiled at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, showcasing Hyundai’s commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle space.

Hyundai Motor President and CEO Jae Hoon Chang revealed plans to increase the company’s share of hybrids in its lineup to cater to the preferences of US consumers. Recognizing the current shortage of hybrids in the North American market, Hyundai aims to address this demand by expanding its hybrid offerings. This strategic move aligns with the company’s goal of capturing a larger market share in the evolving automotive landscape.

While the Concept Seven boasts impressive specifications, including fast charging capabilities and a range of over 300 miles, Hyundai is looking towards the future of electric vehicles. The company is exploring the development of Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) to offer even greater range to consumers. By incorporating technologies similar to those used in models like the BMW i3 and Chevy Volt, Hyundai hopes to produce EREVs with a range exceeding 560 miles on a single charge.

The Ioniq 9 stands out as one of Hyundai’s most ambitious concepts, with a wheelbase longer than that of the Cadillac Escalade. Its striking design features, including an extra-tall grille, position it among the ranks of other large SUVs and trucks on the market. Hyundai’s bold approach to design and innovation in the Ioniq 9 sets a new standard for electric SUVs, offering customers a unique and dynamic driving experience.

Hyundai’s announcement of the Ioniq 9 signals a significant step forward in the electrification of the automotive industry. With a focus on innovation, design, and addressing consumer preferences, Hyundai is poised to make a lasting impact in the growing electric vehicle market. As the company continues to push boundaries and expand its lineup of electrified vehicles, the future looks bright for Hyundai and its commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
